The people of Sault Ste. Marie Ontario erected a cenotaph in 1925 to honour those from the Sault Ste. Marie area who had given their lives in the "War to end all Wars". Mr. Curran, the publisher of the local newspaper, the Sault Daily Star, wrote to Mr. Kipling and asked if he would write a suitable verse to be inscribed on the cenotaph. Mr. Kipling, a noted author of the period, had lost a son in the war, and penned the following in response to Mr. Curran's request.
