With over 400 branches across the province, your organization is a mainstay of service and commemoration in our communities. While your focus has broadened to include contributing to neighbourly wellbeing through initiatives such as sports sponsorships, and youth and seniors programs, your primary emphasis remains honouring and caring for our Veterans. This book is the result of the hard work of those who served in the armed forces, and their family and friends, submitting stories and military biographies. The collection recognizes the bravery, camaraderie and sacrifice of our servicemen and women, while educating younger generations about those who dedicated their lives to Crown and Country. We only truly understand the present by knowing our past, and the Ontario Command of the Royal Canadian Legion has done a marvelous job in being "Keepers of Remembrance". As The Queen's representative in Ontario, I commend all those involved in the creation of this notable publication. This important document details the lives of more than 450 veterans and commemorates their sacrifices — its pages reveal a proud and honourable tradition. It is therefore fitting for us to recognize The Royal Canadian Legion, Ontario Command’s hard work preserving the stories and history of its membership for future generations. I would also like to extend gratitude to the families who participated by submitting photos and stories for publication. The history of our veterans should never be far from our minds, as we enjoy the freedoms that they helped protect and preserve. Please accept my congratulations on creating this vital resource. 5 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT My friends and comrades, how can we properly recognize and honour someone who has freely stepped forward to defend their country, its citizens, their way of life and each other? How do we thank those who were prepared to give "their todays" for all of our tomorrows? We honour them and that memory by never forgetting that we owe all of them, from whatever war, conflict or mission a debt that can never fully be repaid and that their patriotism, service and self sacrifice, is forever remembered and is never forgotten or taken for granted. That is why Ontario Command of the Royal Canadian Legion in conjunction with Fenety Marketing has produced our first "Military Service Recognition Book" . That all our "local heroes" from across this Province, whatever their service, from the Boer War to Afghanistan, WILL BE REMEMBERED. That their record of individual service, personal stories, triumphs or tragedies can be told and honoured by all of us who have benefited so profoundly by their actions. I personally thank all those who have chosen to contribute and share their, or a family member’s “story” with us and as we read through these “biographies” of service let us all receive understanding of the meaning of patriotism, duty and sacrifice. On behalf of Ontario Command I would also like to thank Comrade Ron Goebel for "chairing" the activities of our "Military Service Recognition Book" initiative and the dedication and hard work of our submission coordinators, Carolyn McCaul and Mary Ann Goheen and Command Staff, whose contributions have been just awesome. 7 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Comrades, Ontario Command is very proud to introduce our first most successful Military Service Recognition Book to our Branches and general public. Our expectations for the first book far exceeded the number of submissions that we had expected and have not all been included in this book. However, additional submissions received will be included in our second book that will be published in September of 2015. This and all future books will be most beneficial to all Branches within our Command that will identify and recognize many of our Veterans in the Province of Ontario who have served their country so well during times of conflict and peace. Having these books go into our local schools, libraries and our local Branches, can only assist us in the teachings of Remembrance, and at the same time maintain a living document of the Military Service of our Veterans in Ontario. In 2011, our Provincial President, Andre Paquette, appointed a Committee to research the possibility for such a book for Ontario Command. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking him for the appointment as Chairman of this important Committee. It has been both a privilege and an honour to have worked on behalf of Ontario Command in the research and implementation of such a worthwhile initiative. The other members appointed to that Committee were, Comrades Brian Weaver, Brian Smith, Sharon McKeown and Robyn Zettler. I thank all of them for their assistance, hard work and dedication over the past two years in putting this book together. A big thank you as well to our Command President Bruce Julian and Executive Director Dave Gordon for all of their assistance in the finalization of our program, and the publication of our first book. A very special thanks to our book coordinators Comrades Carolyn McCaul and Mary Ann Goheen. The success of our first book would not have been possible without all of their hard work and dedication. They worked many long hours to ensure that our submissions for the book were sent to the publishers in a timely fashion. I congratulate all of our Branches and their members for their participation in the gathering of stories that make this book so special. For any Branches who may not yet be involved in our program, I encourage you to do so for our next publication. It is only through your efforts that we will continue to be successful in telling the story about our Veterans in communities all across Ontario. Students are asked to submit original artwork based on the theme of Remembrance. Srinidhi won the Senior Color Poster category of the competition at Branch #36, Dundas, Ontario Valley City Branch. Her entry then went on to the Zone, District and Provincial competitions, where she also won first place at these various levels. From Ontario Command, all the winning entries go on to Dominion Command for judging at the Dominion level. Her entry won second place at Dominion Command in the Senior Colour Poster category.

15 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ABRAMS, Raymond James Raymond was born in Detroit, Michigan on August 17, 1917. He joined the Canadian Army on November 23, 1941 and served as a Corporal with the Royal Canadian Engineers in France, Holland and Germany. He was very proud to be a D-Day veteran. At the end of hostilities, he was discharged on February 13, 1946 and was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, and the Victory Medal. He returned to Sudbury, Ontario to work in the nickel/copper mines. In 1946, Raymond married Madeleine McKeown. He was proud of his service as a member of Onaping Falls Legion Branch 503 for forty-three years. Raymond passed away on September 21, 1992. AITKEN, Ernest J. Ernest was born on March 26, 1921 in Markdale, Ontario. He joined the Army on May 27, 1942 and served as Lance Bombardier and TOS Gunner with the Royal Canadian Artillery in the United Kingdom and in Continental Europe. Discharged on January 19, 1946, Ernest received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. Ernest died on September 11, 1962 and he is buried in St. Matthias Anglican Cemetery in Berkeley. ADAMS, Eric C. Eric was born on January 21, 1915 in Warwick, England. At the age of 12, he immigrated to Canada as a foster child. As he grew older, he came to the Simcoe area where he met his wife, Ann Shewchuk, and they had three children. He worked as an auto body repairman and became noted for his excellent workmanship. Eric enlisted in the Canadian Army on July 22, 1940 and served in England, France and Germany with the Royal Canadian Artillery, 41st Battery, and 102nd Battery. He was discharged on September 18, 1945. Eric was a member of Legion Branch 79 before he passed away on August 7, 1998.

17 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ALLAN, David David was born in Kirkcaldy, Fifeshire in Scotland on April 24, 1926. He enlisted in the Britain Merchant Navy on November 30, 1941 and served on S/S Dundee, S/S Capito, S/S Fidra and S/S Cape Wrath on the high seas, in U.K. waters, in the Mediterranean and during the France invasion. As part of the gun crew, he survived attacks on convoys, especially in 1943. He was discharged on January 18, 1947. David has been a member of Orillia Legion Branch 34 for fourteen years. ANDREWS, Irvin L. Irvin was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on December 16, 1932. He enlisted on February 13, 1951 and served in the RCA (AA) in Picton, then 4 RCHA and 2 RCHA in Petawawa. In 1970, he remustered to RCASC, retiring in 1983 at Petawawa. He received numerous medals for tours in Canada, Egypt, Germany, Belgium and Greenland and was discharged on August 18, 1983. In the community, he was very involved with the Red Cross for 45 years and received the Order of the Red Cross Medal. Irvin served as President and is a 25-year member of the Petawawa Community Policing Committee and is a Past President and member of the Eastern Gunners Association. He received the Ontario Government Community Service Award for 45 years of service and was presented with the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation for his work with veterans in 2012. He received the Meritorious Service Medal from The Royal Canadian Legion and is the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth medals, 25th, 50th, and the Diamond Jubilee. He is still Veterans Service Officer for Petawawa Legion Branch 517 and G7 Zone. Irvin and his wife remained in Petawawa and they have five children. ANANICZ, Leon Leon was born in Aleksandria, Poland on October 14, 1918 and he served in the Far and Middle East during WWII. In 1944, he was placed with the 1st Polish Armoured Division under command of the 2nd Canadian Corps and took part in the France, Belgium, Holland and Germany campaign as a Lieutenant in the 2nd Field Regiment. He received the 1939-45 Star, the Africa Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the War Medal 1939-45 and the Canadian Forces Decoration. He also received the Polish Bronze Cross of Valour, the Cross of Merit and the Polish War Medal WW2. Leon immigrated to Canada in 1948. He was president of Polish Veterans Legion Branch 418 in 1955, 1957 and 1969. He was also a member of the 10th Battery Association in St. Catharines, Ontario. Leon was a member of Branch 418 for 52 years.
