141 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HEDERICH, Martin P. Martin was born on October 12, 1950 in Marburg/Hessen, Germany. He joined the German Army on July 1, 1972 and rose through the ranks in the Armoured Reconnaissance to Captain and Company Commander. With an army scholarship, he attended Hamburg University and graduated with a Masters Degree in Education. He came to Canada for three tours of duty at CFB Shilo in Manitoba in 1978, 1981 in 1983 to serve at GATES (German Army Training Establishment/Shilo). After having served in Canada, Great Britain, France and Germany, he retired on June 30, 1984 and started the stove and fireplace company which he still operates today. Martin has been a member of George Duff Memorial Legion Branch 516 for five years. HICKEY, Austin A. Austin was born on July 7, 1932 in Kapuskasing, Ontario. In June 1951, he enlisted in the Algonquin Regiment, “C” Company (Infantry), and trained in Gagetown, New Brunswick. Private 1st Class Hickey spent eight months in Canada and the remainder in Hanover, Germany. He was discharged in September 1954 and resides in Kapuskasing where he has been a member of Legion Branch 85 for sixty years. HERMAN, James Joseph James was born in Drayton, Ontario on February 28, 1918. He joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps on May 8, 1942 and served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe until his discharge on February 13, 1946. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-45. Upon his return to civilian life, James married and took up farming in Wellington County, Ontario. He also worked as a nursing orderly in a home for the aged. James was a member of Elora Legion Branch 229 for twenty-two years before he passed away on January 1, 1969.
