195 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND MAYER, Hector C. Hector was born in Kapuskasing, Ontario on October 25, 1925. He joined the Army in September 1939 and served as a Sapper with the Royal Canadian Engineers in Chilliwack, British Columbia during World War II. Hector was discharged on August 15, 1944 and he was awarded the War Medal 1939-45. After the war, he returned to Kapuskasing and worked for a local paper company. He resides in Kapuskasing. MCCARTHY, James W. “Bill” Bill was born in Matheson, Ontario on August 16, 1925. He enlisted in the Air Force on December 3, 1943 and was part of the RCAF aircrew serving in Canada. For his service, he received the War Medal 1939-45. After his discharge on October 18, 1946, he returned to civilian life but in 1969, joined the Royal Canadian Air Cadets and became part of 729 Squadron. He got his Glider Pilot’s ticket and ferried cadets as part of their education. He stepped down in 1984 as a glider pilot but remained with the Squadron as an Officer. Bill was honoured by the Cadet movement by having this Squadron named the “Major J. W. McCarthy Squadron”, only the fourth individual to receive such an award in Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force Reserve and then headed up the Watershed Gliding Centre in Iroquois Falls as a Lieutenant, finishing the running of the Centre as a Major. To this day, Bill continues to be involved with 729 Squadron. He has been a member of Iroquois Falls Legion Branch 70 for more than sixty-five years. MCCALL, Malcolm B. “Mac” Mac was born on January 17, 1925 in Kintore, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1956 and served in Canada, France and Germany during the Cold War. His overseas postings saw him serve in Metz, France and Lahr, Germany. He was discharged in 1977. Mac was a member of St. Mary’s Legion Branch 236 for twenty-one years before he passed away on August 5, 1991.
