47 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BOURCIER, Lionel J. Lionel was born on August 19, 1924 in Espanola, Ontario. He joined the Army in 1943 and served with the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment in Canada, United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean and Continental Europe until his discharge in 1946. Lionel was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, the War Medal 1939-45 and the Canadian Forces Decoration. On his return home after the war, he served his town for many years spending ten years each on the Espanola Police Force and the Volunteer Fire Department. He was also thirty-seven years with International Nickel. Lionel was a member of Espanola Legion Branch 39 for sixty-seven years and served with the Northern Branch of the War Pensioners of Canada. He earned many accolades along the way, including a Life Membership and a Meritorious Service Medal with The Royal Canadian Legion. Lionel raised seven children with his wife Doreen and he passed away on January 12, 2013. BOYCE, George A. George was born in London, England on January 5, 1894. As a 20-year old farmer with one year of military service, he was one of the first to enlist in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on September 22, 1914. He served with the 2nd Battalion (Eastern Ontario Regiment) in Canada, France and Belgium and was killed in action at Passchendaele Ridge on November 6, 1917 at the age of 23. He has no known grave. George is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium, Panel 10-26-28 and his name also appears on page 205 of The First World War Book of Remembrance in The Peace Tower in Ottawa. His Medals, the Memorial Cross presented to his mother and other memorabilia, are displayed with dignity and honour at Kitchener’s Legion Branch 50. BOWERS, Robert Joseph Robert was born in Gananoque, Ontario on June 30, 1914. He joined the Canadian Army in 1943 and served with the 17th Duke of York Royal Canadian Hussars in England. He passed away on April 27, 1997.
