103 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND EGAN, Donald Elmer Donald was born in Toronto, Ontario on October 15, 1933. His first experience with the military was when his school marched to the sound of the “Air Force March Past” played on the school system during World War II. The family moved to Brampton in June 1950. Both he and his brother joined the Army (Reserve) on June 26, 1950, with the Lorne Scots Peel, Dufferin and Halton Regiment. They were met at the Armoury door by Captain Ted Conover who rushed them through the paperwork, a medical, and the Quartermaster stores overseen by Sergeant Major Al Rudd. They were to report back Friday night in a uniform to be an advance party for a weekend exercise. Sergeant Harry Walker drove them to Port Carling. The next day they assaulted an island nearby. He was in high school when he met his future wife, Carol Ann Harmsworth. He took basic training at Camp Petawawa with the RCR. He ended his military career as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1974. After four years as CO, he retired, later to be brought back as the Honourary Lieutenant Colonel for another four years. He is a 47-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15 and currently resides in Brampton. EVANS, Hartley “Glenn” Glenn, the son of David Evans and Ruth Duckwith, was born in Erin, Ontario on July 28, 1930. On July 24, 1952, he joined the Lorne Scots P.D. & H. Reserve Army. A member of Headquarters Coy, he trained at the BramptonArmouries on Thursday nights and at a training location in Erin. Valuable practical experience was gained as most of the Officers and Instructor were veterans of WorldWar II. Glenn qualified as an infantry signaler and progressed through the ranks to Cpl. and Sgt. Outdoor exercises with regular forces instructors was at Niagara, Borden, Meaford and the Long Branch Rifle Ranges. Of significant importance were Exercise Old Fox and Exercise Search providing communications in the aftermath of Hurricane Hazel in 1954, ceremonial activities at cenotaphs, change of command, the Toronto Garrison Parade, and the welcome of Princess Margaret to Canada in 1958. He was released in 1961 and in civilian life, Glenn was an electrician/plumber and a volunteer firefighter for 37 Years. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Erin Branch 442 for 27 years and President from 1978 to 1981. Sgt. Hartley “Glenn” Evans passed away in 1984 and was buried in the Erin Union Cemetery. EVANS, David Franklin Stuart David was born in Picton, Ontario on June 27, 1958. He enlisted in the Army (Reserve Force) in 1992. He was adjutant of the Hasty P’s as well as DCO. David was a qualified colonel in the Logistics Core. He was a course officer on multiple courses. He also spearheaded the pilgrimage to Assoro. David was the third of a four-generation military family. He was released in 2018. He was a 28-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Wellington Branch 160. David passed away on March 1, 2022. He had been a resident of Wellington since 1989.
