107 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FINLAY, John Ellsworth John was born in Coboconk, Ontario on March 25, 1883. He moved to Tory Hill to join his older brother Edward in the family lumber business working as a timber cruiser. Before the war, John supervised the maintenance and repair of the local railway Irondale, Bancroft, and Ottawa. John enlisted in the Army (Regular) on August 18, 1916. His experience would later result in being transferred to the Railway Troops in France. Initially attached to the 109th Battalion, later assigned to the 45th Regiment and sent to the United Kingdom. He was transferred to the 2nd Labour Battalion, followed by another transfer to the 12th Railway Troops serving in France. After being discharged on April 13, 1920 John served with the Victoria and Haliburton Regiment. For his war service, John was awarded the Military Cross, Victoria Medal, Defence Medal, and Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officer Decoration. During the 1920s, he moved to Toronto with his young family and started a construction company. During the early 1930s, he was employed by his wife’s uncle to supervise his Roman Meal factory in Toronto where he worked until his death on May 19, 1947. FLEMING, Kenneth Patrick Kenneth was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland on November 12, 1956. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on June 12, 1980, and served in the 8th Canadian Hussars from 1981 to 1986, as a PERI from 1986 to 1997, and with the Postal Corps from 1997 to 2004. He was discharged on November 24, 2004. Kenneth received the United Nations, Timor and Golan Medals and the Canadian Forces Decoration with one bar. He is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Kanata Branch 638 and currently resides in Kanata. FINLAY, Peter Peter was born on May 19, 1846, in Knockando, Moray, Scotland and he was christened on May 31, 1846. It is not known when he moved to Canada with his mother. He joined the militia in 1867 and served with the 34th Battalion Volunteer Militia, 7th Company under Captain Robert Spears. He received the Canada General Service Medal (1866-1870) with the Fenian Raid Clasp. Peter married Harriette Rex on January 29, 1875, in Uxbridge and soon after moved to Coboconk. They had four children. Peter passed away in Coboconk on January 7, 1906.
