109 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FOORD, Richard John Richard was born in Toronto, Ontario on March 20, 1916. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) in November 1942 and did his training in Canada to serve during World War II. He was transferred to 428 Ghost Squadron in England and flew all his missions with his crew aboard the Lancaster Aircraft KB760. They completed 72 operations with Pilot F/O R L Boyle, Nav F/O D A Matherson, Bombardier F/O R J Foord, Tail Gunner Flt/Lt D W Irvine, and WAG W/O I D A McAmmond. He was released on August 25, 1945. Richard passed away in May 1985. FOWLER, Robert Kenneth Robert was born in St. Thomas, Ontario on August 17, 1954. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on November 7, 1973, and served with 1 RCR in Cyprus from 1974 to May 1975. He was discharged on April 21, 1976. When he took his discharge in London, Ontario, he applied for a job with Summit Food Distributor, remaining with this company for 42 years and retiring in 2017. He and his wife, Carole, reside in St. Thomas, Ontario. He is a forty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Port Stanley Branch 410. FORREST, Charles Barclay Charles was born in Morris Township, Huron County, Ontario on June 20, 1883, one of seven children. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Wroxeter on May 19, 1916, with 161st Battalion. In November, he arrived in England on the SS Lalandand was transferred to the 58th Battalion and then to the 3rd C.E. Battalion. In July 1917, he was slightly wounded but he remained on duty. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in August. Charles was killed in action in Belgum on October 26, 1917, by a sniper’s bullet at Passchendaele. He is remembered on a plaque at Menin Gate. It was at this time that the British Government started the program to honour the soldiers who made it the ultimate sacrifice. The next of kin were given bronze copper medal with the soldier’s name, rank, and serial number engraved on the rim, nicknamed the “death pennies”. Charles’ mother had it placed on the family tombstone.
