115 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GARDNER, Robert Bell Robert was born in Glasgow, Scotland on March 10, 1931, where he lived and was educated. Robert joined the Royal Air Force on May 10, 1949, to fulfill his National Service obligations. He served in Kabrit, Egypt with 204 Squadron. He was honourably discharged on April 27, 1951, transferring to the Reserves. Bob and his wife Elizabeth had two children, John and Marion. After immigrating to Canada, Bob worked for DeBoers Canada rising to the position of Assistant Manager. Bob joined The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 139 in Streetsville, Ontario in March 1988 and was a member for 35 years. He was a proud member of the Branch Colour Party into his late eighties. He was awarded the Certificate of Appreciation for his dedicated service in August 2015 upon his retirement from the Colour Party. Bob passed away on September 7, 2022, and his ashes were returned to his native Scotland. He had been a resident of Mississauga since 1988. GENEREUX, Arthur Joseph Arthur was born on November 5, 1916, in Deseronto, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) on April 5, 1940, as an airframe mechanic. He served in World War II and was stationed in the United Kingdom, Normandy, Belgium, and Holland. He landed on Juno Beach on D-Day plus 1, in charge of the advance party. During the next 24 hours, Sergeant Genereux and his party cleared crashes from landing strips and roads, necessitating operations in mined areas and under fire on a number of occasions. He was awarded the British Empire Medal for his displayed initiative, intelligence, and courage during this time; it was noted that he displayed high qualities of leadership and has contributed much to the efficient operations of a number of airfields on the continent. He was discharged September 20, 1945, and returned home to work at the Canada Cement Company. He and his wife Pearl were blessed with five children and ten grandchildren before his death on July 23, 2001. Arthur loved his family fiercely and could usually be found in the thick of the shenanigans with his grandkids. GARTON, Edward Edward was born on July 1, 1890, inWawanosh Township near Teeswater, Ontario. He was a teamster. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on March 4, 1916, with the 161st Overseas Battalion in Brussels at the age of 26. Eight months later, he left Halifax on the Lapland to arrive in Liverpool, England ten days later. He was assigned to the 4th Canadian Reserves Battalion and served in England before assignment to the 18th Battalion and sent to France. He returned to Canada aboard the RMS Caronia and was discharged on July 4, 1919. He also served in World War II in the Army as a Sergeant. He married Hulda Rutledge in 1914 in Brussels. They had no children. He was a volunteer fireman and handy man. The couple moved to Ripley in 1960 and he passed away in 1972. He was a charter member for 29 years of The Royal Canadian Legion Brussels Branch 218 formed in 1931.
