133 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HAMILTON, William William was born in Banbridge, Ireland on July 8, 1902. He immigrated to Canada at the age of 18 and joined the Army on February 16, 1940. He served with the 48th Highlanders then transferred to the Royal CanadianArmy Service Corps. After serving in the United Kingdom and the central Mediterranean area, he was discharged on August 20, 1945. William was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the Canadian Efficiency Medal. He subsequently joined the Lorne Scots and was an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion Orangeville Branch 233 for many years. William passed away on June 17, 1987. HANCOCK, Ross O. A. Ross was born in Toronto, Ontario on July 12, 1925. He lied about his age and joined the Army at 16. He was found out and sent home so he joined the Air Force on February 2, 1943 at the age of 18. Ross was called to service with the Air Force and was part of the RAF Enquiry Service Unit #4 that served in Germany following the declaration of peace. Their job was to locate battlefields and downed planes and recover the soldiers who were M.I.A. when their craft crashed. They were given a limited time to accomplish the task and risked attack from the Russians who controlled East Germany. Their units often faced Russian fire but many soldiers rest in peace in marked and maintained resting places because of their efforts. He was discharged on September 30, 1947. Ross was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Harry Wray Branch 302 for more than fifty years before he passed away on March 12, 2008. HAMMER, Maurice Otto “Morrie” Morrie was born on October 20, 1918, to Ezra George and Irene Marie (Heimpel) Hammer. He had four siblings: Elaine Marie, Grace Elvira, Kenneth George and Bruce Alexander. Morrie enlisted in the Air Force (Regular Force) with 408 Squadron in 1942 to serve in World War II and trained as a wireless operator. He was stationed in England and became very proficient in Morse Code and repairing/rebuilding radios in Halifax bombers and other planes. Maurice married Lotus Pansy (Forster) and they raised one child, Kathleen May (Brenner). Morrie and brother Ken owned and operated Hammer Hardware for many decades in New Hamburg. He was one of the fifty Charter Members of The Royal Canadian Legion New Hamburg Branch 532 and was a member for 47 years. His name is inscribed on their Veterans Memorial Plaque. Morrie passed away on November 26, 2000, and has been laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery in New Hamburg.
