135 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HARLEY, Curtis R. Curtis was born in St. Catharines, Ontario on February 22, 1972. He always wanted to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps and become a member of the cadets in St. Catharines. He enrolled in the Regular Army in 2007 in Petawawa serving with the Royal Canadian Regiment. Curtis was a Corporal serving in Afghanistan with 1st Battalion Charles Company on a one-year mission. He was released in 2013. Curtis returned home suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and continues to do so to this day. He is a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 613 Talbot Trail in Fonthill. HARPER, John Hall John was born in New Toronto, Ontario on February 26, 1921. He was a young machinist employed with Rogers Radio Tubes who built Canadian designed radar sets for the R.C.N. when war broke out in 1939. This was “essential war work”, but many of his friends had left to serve and so he joined the RCNVR on June 22, 1944. In the Navy, he worked at three naval dockyards and as a duty ERA on a frigate protecting convoys. He served with HMCS Stadacona, HMCS Protector, HMCS Peregrineand HMCS Prestonianon the High Seas. John stayed in the Navy until March 25, 1946, when he was discharged. He volunteered to continue with naval service in the war against Japan. Rogers wrote the Navy Board a letter requesting the return of the Machinist. As Philips Electronics from Eindhoven (Netherlands) had taken over the Toronto Rogers manufacturing facility, John returned to work for this firm. He passed away on October 24, 2004. HARLEY, Rogers Swayze Rogers was born in St. Catharines, Ontario on November 25, 1924. He began high school learning signals, so he was prepared to join the Army. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in 1942 and served with 4th Canadian Armoured Division, Signal Corps Baker Company at the front across Europe into Berlin duringWorldWar II. He was released in 1946 and upon returning home he attended the University of Toronto. He was a founder of Amateur Radio Club in Niagara. He was a resident of Fonthill, Ontario from 1950 to 2000. Rogers passed away on October 26, 2003.
