149 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HILL, Clarence Clarence was born on June 5, 1915, in Toronto, Ontario, to John and Sarah Ann Hill. He grew up in Richvale, Ontario and married Lydia Juul Hill on November 15, 1941. Prior to enlisting in the Army (Regular Force) through the National Resources Mobilization Act (NRMA) in Toronto on March 18, 1943, Clarence worked as a pressman and then at General Motors (Oshawa) as a machinist. Following basic training in Peterborough, he was transferred to Petawawa for Sapper training with the Engineers. He served with 10 Coy, R Wing, Dufferin, and Haldiman Rifles. On November 30, 1944, he attested into the General Service ranks and embarked to the UK on February 25, 1945. In the UK and NW Europe, he was employed in general duties with the Engineers. He returned to Canada and was discharged on March 16, 1946. He returned to work at GM for a while and then worked as a carpenter building houses in the Oshawa area, including his own. He and Lydia had five children: Gary, Joan, Daniel, Janice, and Linda. An avid fisherman, boater and guitar player, Clarence also enjoyed raising pigeons. Clarence passed away on April 5, 1965 and is buried in Westminster Memorial Park. HOBDEN, Russell Hesperian Russell was born in Whitefish, Ontario on September 8, 1915. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on September 1, 1944 and served with the Stormont, Glengarry and Dundas Highlanders in England, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and France until his discharge on August 8, 1946. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Massey Branch 432 for over 25 years and was a resident of Massey, Ontario from 1950 to 2000. Russell passed away on October 20, 2002. HILYER, Richard John “Dick” Richard was born on January 29, 1918, in Somerville, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on June 4, 1942, and served with 6th Anti-Tank Regiment in Normandy, Falaise, Caen, Belgium and Newfoundland. He sailed to Britain on the Queen Mary in September 1943. He trained in the United Kingdom and was on leave to Scotland in November 1943. He embarked for France in 1944 landing in Normandy on July 9. He was in the Battle for Caen, Falaise and went into Belgium. He married a Scottish war bride in April 1945 and returned on board the Queen Elizabeth in December 1945. He re-enlisted for a year and was stationed in Germany with 79th Field Regiment, RCA, 27th Canadian Infantry Brigade. Richard was a resident of Peterborough and passed away on September 29, 2008.
