153 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HOMUTH, Clarence Edward “Lightning” “Clare” Clare was born on July 31, 1921, in Wingham, Ontario. He enlisted on September 21, 1939 with the 1st Hussars. He trained at Camp Borden and London and was shipped overseas in November 1941. As part of 6th Canadian Armoured Brigade, he was part of the assault on Juno Beach on June 6, 1944. His Sherman tank unit advanced inland as far as Fontaine-Henry where they were ambushed and Clare was killed. He is buried at Bény-sur-Mer Cemetery in Normandy. Clare was one of five Homuth brothers who served during World War II and the only one who did not survive. HOPKINS, William Robert William was born in Tobermory, Ontario on December 26, 1896. He enlisted in the Army on April 4, 1916, and served in England and in France with 160th battalion during World War I. He developed TB and was repatriated back to Canada. He died in Hospital in London, Ontario on October 25, 1924. HOMUTH, Robert James “Bob” Bob was born on March 5, 1918, in Wingham, Ontario. He was conscripted in 1942 and he was assigned to the Canadian Army Service Corps, Ordnance Branch in Ottawa, Ontario. After his discharge in 1947, he returned to school on the Veterans Plan and had a successful career in education. He also led a cadet corps at Mitchell District High School during his years there. Bob was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Clinton Branch 140 and Mitchell Branch 128 for a total of 35 years before he passed away in Clinton on February 8, 1985.
