171 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND JOWETT, Donald Donald was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England, on January 25, 1935. He joined the British Army in particular the 1st Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment on June 11, 1953, at the age of eighteen. In the two years of service, Donald was posted to many areas of the world including Aden, Ceylon, Egypt, Malaya, and Singapore before being discharged on June 9, 1955. Donald was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for 53 years at the Colonel Alex Thompson Memorial Branch 82 in Port Credit. Don was also a life member of Anavets Lakeview 262, he held many positions on the executive and was the 1st Vice President when he passed away on September 4, 2022. He enjoyed going to schools during Remembrance Day celebrations to talk to children about the war. He loved to assist the vets when they came from Sunnybrook. Don was an avid golfer who golfed almost every day and always had time for cards and darts. He loved his garden and was a wonderful family man. KEFFER, Halbert Lawrence “Hal” Hal was born in Ethel, Ontario on January 31, 1920. He grew up on the farm with his parents Telford and Pearl and five brothers, Wilfred, Charlie, Ralph, Fred, and Lloyd. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II in 1942. He worked in the engine room as an engineer on a corvette on the Atlantic Ocean when it got hit by a torpedo and they had to jump ship. The survivors were in the cold ocean for quite a while before being rescued. He recovered and was assigned duty on the ship Snowberry. He met his wife Bernadette Kilroe while on leave in Calgary, later marrying in October 1943. He became an officer and was discharged on August 16, 1946. He spent 181 days at sea. The couple came to Brussels where he worked in a machine shop. He left Brussels in 1949 to move to Richmond, BC. He started working for the Richmond School Board as a school custodian eventually being promoted until he was the Assistant Superintendent of Operations. Hal and his wife had four children, Gloria, Patricia, Pamela, and Richard. Hal passed away on May 9, 1975. KEAST, John R. John was born in Guelph, Ontario on April 9, 1923. He joined the Army on September 3, 1941 and served with the 63rd Battery, 19th Field Regiment, in Canada and England. Awarded the 1939-45 Star and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, he was discharged on October 28, 1945. John, a famous artist, passed away on June 22, 2011. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Bruce Mines Branch 211 for seventeen years.
