185 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KNIGHT, Garnet Garnet was born in Kearney, Ontario on August 7, 1909. He joined the Army on July 2, 1941 and served in Canada, England, France, Holland and Germany with the Queen’s Own Rifles. A&SH of C (Princess Louise’s) 1st Battalion, until his discharge on October 30, 1945. He was wounded in action at the Battle of Kusten Canal in Germany on April 22, 1945 and he fought with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada during the liberation of The Netherlands. Garnet and his wife Edith raised ten children. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Orillia Branch 34 for a year before he died on December 17, 1973. KUFNER, Edward Edward was born in Zolkiew, Poland, on July 2, 1923. He enlisted with the Polish II Corps on December 3, 1941 during World War II. His service brought him to England, Middle East, Libya and Italy. After a light battle in Foggia, Italy in March 1944, the company Commander was badly wounded. He took over command and advanced toward Cerro San Vincenzo and with fourteen men destroyed two mortar positions and took over 25 prisoners. For this achievement, he received the Cross of Valour and was promoted to Sergeant. He was also awarded the War Medal 1939-1945, 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal, and Italy Star. Edward was discharged on November 19, 1947. He is a sixty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Dambusters Branch 617. KNOWLES, Harry Edwards Harry was born in St. George, Ontario on August 8, 1918. He enlisted with the Dufferin and Haldimand Rifles of Canada on July 30, 1940, serving with the Canadian Infantry Corps. He saw service in England, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany with the Canadian Armoured Corps and was discharged in April 1946. Harry received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the Defence Medal, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the 1939-1945 Star, the War Medal 1939-1945 and the Korean Conflict Medal. He married Doris Bennett from South Wales on October 15, 1945 and they raised four children. Harry has been a Life Member of the Lynden Lions and Lynden Legion Branch 500 for 66 years. He has held many service positions within The Legion, including President and Treasurer. Harry passed away on April 1, 2014.
