187 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND KYLE, Ian Frank Ian was born in Iserlohn, West Germany in 1955 where his father, James Kyle, was serving with the Canadian Army. They finally settled in Cobourg, Ontario. During that time, he was involved in Scouting and the 14th Field Battery Army Cadets. In 1974, he travelled to England and joined the Royal Marines. After completing training, he was drafted to 42 Commando RM. He completed two tours of Northern Ireland being slightly wounded on his second. In 1988, he and his wife returned to Canada and he joined the Army. He served with the Royal Canadian Regiment for most of his career. His postings included: 1 RCR London, ON from 1988 to 1992; 1 RCR Petawawa from 1992 to 1995; RCR Battle School from 1995 to 1997; Dwyer Hill Training Centre (JTF 2) from 1997 to 2000; 3 RCR Petawawa from 2000 to 2003; Reginal Support Service Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment Peterborough from 2003 to 2007; 3 RCR from 2007 to his release in December 2008. He served a further three years with the Hasty P’s in Peterborough. He was the rank of Warrant Officer upon retirement. His deployments include Northern Ireland, Far East, Cyprus and Bosnia. His son is also a Veteran of Afghanistan, Roto 10, 2010. He is a oneyear member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 133. LAFOND, François J. E. François was born in Drummondville, Quebec on July 22, 1957. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Regular Force) on September 9, 1974, in Montréal, Québec. After completing his basic and English training at CFB St. Jean, he completed his firefighter training at CFB Borden Ontario. He was also trained and certified as a fire and explosion investigator. He received his accreditations from Maryland University. His postings included 8 Wing Trenton, Ontario; 15 Wing Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan; 12 Wing Shearwater, NS; Canadian Forces Fire Academy in Borden, Ontario. He also served with Helicopter Squadrons on HMCS Annapolis and Skeena and completed two tours with NATO. His medals include the (CD1) Canadian Forces Decoration, (NATO) Special Service Medal, (CCM) Confederation of Canada Medal and the (FSEM) Fire Service Exemplary Medal. After serving for 26 years, François received an honourary discharge on July 22, 2000, at the rank of Master Warrant Officer. He is a 26-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Milton Wesley Branch 426. LACH, Jan Jan was born in Wierzbie, Stopnicakielce, Poland on August 23, 1914 and served with the 2nd Armoured Battalion, taking part in a campaign in Poland from 19381939 when he was deported to the USSR. When released, he enlisted in the Polish Forces in the USSR on August 25, 1941. On crossing the Soviet-Iranian frontier, he came under British Command. He served in the Middle East (1942-44), Italy (1944-46) and in the UK (1946-47). He was posted to the 4th Armoured Regiment, 2 Warszawska Armoured Division, 2nd Polish Corps, 8th British Army and saw action in Italy at the Battle for Monte Cassino, at Gustav-Hitler Line, AnconaGoths Line, Rearguard of the 8th British Army, Northern Apennines, on the River Senio, Battle for Bologna. Discharged on December 2, 1946, Jan received the Cross of Monte Cassino, Cross for Valour, Army Medal, Honourary Decoration for Wounds, 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Polish Veterans Branch 418 in St. Catharines for 58 years before he passed away on February 27, 1997.
