35 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BAKER, Peter Keith Peter was born in Ottawa on August 23, 1958. He enrolled at HMCS Carleton in July 1976. Pursuing post-secondary education in Toronto, he transferred to HMCS York. With an additional trade of Bosun (Ships Diver qualified) he followed the development of diving as a full trade in the Navy Reserve Force. He trained at Fleet Diving Units Atlantic and Pacific and deployed with Regional Dive Centre Central diving on East and West coasts, in Bermuda, and across Ontario and Quebec from Thunder Bay to Gatineau. As a Graphic Designer with his civilian employers, Peter designed identities and visual programs for clients such as WestJet, CIBC, Air Miles, Toronto Pearson International Airport, and La Capital. When the Navy learned that Peter was a painter, he was often put to work with a roller. Pete retired from the RCN in August 2018. He is a seven-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 10 Todmorden since 2016. He resides in Toronto with his wife Melissa. Their two adult children are Tess and Cole. BARKER, Ernest William Ernie was born in Montreal, Quebec on January 12, 1917. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the Royal CanadianArtillery on February 24, 1942 and served as a gunner with the 15th Field Regiment until his discharge on December 7, 1945. He received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. Ernest was married on January 8, 1941, and had two daughters, Barbara and Irene, and two sons, Ernest and Kenneth. After his discharge, he returned to work in the high explosives division at the C.I.L. in McMasterville, Quebec where he worked until his retirement. He was a volunteer fireman for the Otterburn Park Fire Department and a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Auclair Branch 121. He was a member for 44 years. He lived most of his life in Otterburn Park, Quebec and moved to Ontario later in his life to be closer to his children. Ernie passed away in London, Ontario on March 21, 1999, survived by his wife, Fannie (Chew) and their four children. BARBER, Andrew Peter “Andy” Andy was born in Montreal, Quebec on August 4, 1932. He joined the Navy (Regular Force) at HMCS Donnacona in Montreal on September 6, 1951. He did his basic training at HMCS Cornwallis in Digby, NS followed by another seven months of Communication Training there. He was then drafted aboard HMCS Quebec and participated in NATO exercises in Norway in 1952. Subsequently drafted to HMC LaHulloiseand participated in the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II as part of the Naval Spithead Review in Spithead, England. He was then drafted to HMCS Haida and was a crew member during her second tour of the KoreanWar. Andy spent 22 months aboard the Haidabefore being drafted to HMCS Shearwater in Dartmouth, NS. After five years in the Navy, Andy obtained an honourable discharge back at HMCS Donnacona in September 1956. Andy received the Korean War Service Medal, NATO Medal with Korean Clasp, Canadian Peacekeeper Service Medal, United Nations Medal with Korean Clasp, Sovereign’s Volunteer Service Medal, Minister Veterans Affairs Volunteer Medal, Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, Sigmund Rhee Korean Medal, Korean Goodwill Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Medal. He is a 56-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Streetsville Branch 139 in Mississauga.
