37 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BARNES, Harry Harry Barnes was born on August 12, 1938, to parents Herbert and Elizabeth and grew up in England with siblings, Kathleen, John, and Alan. He followed in his father’s military footsteps, and at the young age of fourteen, as an Army Cadet representing Oldham, Lancashire, he was in the front row at the Queen’s Coronation as she waved to the crowd. In September 1957, as a member of the Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire), he served in the Malayan Emergency until 1959 performing jungle patrols for ten days at a time. For his service, Harry earned his General Service Medal and the PM Medal from the Malayan Government. In 1960, Harry married Sheila and they had three children. Harry spent his working years as a Fitter-Welder in England before moving to Canada, where he also worked with Waterloo Printing in Sales. Harry enjoyed over 40 years as a member of the Elmira Golf Club holding positions on the Board, including the prestigious title of Club Captain. Harry has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530 for over 25 years and is one of our regular visitors, always open to a friendly chat with friends, old and new. BARRON, William George William, commonly known as George, was born in Grey Township, Huron County, Ontario on February 24, 1889. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Brussels on March 11, 1916, with the 161st Battalion. He sailed to England in November 1916 and was absorbed into the 4th Canadian Battalion. He was wounded during action in France on September 2, 1918, when a piece of shrapnel went through his left wrist and came out in the palm of his hand. It was the same day as his brother Archibald was killed in action with a different unit. He was shipped home and was discharged on January 21, 1919. George returned home to his family in Grey Township where he lived with his parents. He became very domestic and could turn his hand at any job. He loved hockey games, reading the Toronto Star, and World news. He loved visiting with extended family and taking his parents for Sunday drives. George passed away on July 16, 1965, and is buried in Brussels Cemetery. BARRON, Archibald Theo Archibald was born in McKillop Township, Ontario on March 5, 1884, and as a very young child, the family moved to Grey Township. Needing adventure, he headed west at sixteen and spent twelve years in Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in Regina on January 3, 1918. He returned to his home in Grey Township and had a visit with his family before he was shipped overseas and joined the Canadian Infantry Nova Scotia Regiment and served in the 85th Battalion in March. Private Barron was killed in action on September 9, 1918, at Pas-deCalais, France and is buried in Dury Mill British Cemetery. His name is recorded in the Books of Remembrance at the Peace Tower. His family was presented with the rare Dead Man’s Penny, which his family still cherishes today. His name is recorded on his parents’ tombstone at Brussels Cemetery in Brussels, Ontario.
