39 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BARRONS, Ross Ross was born on March 22, 1897, in Belmont Township, Peterborough County, Ontario, the oldest of eleven children of Charles and Delilah (Mumby) Barrons. He attested in Kingston on May 31, 1918, and departed for the UK with the 6th Canadian Reserve Battalion on June 28, 1918 on the HMS City of Vienna. It went aground near Halifax, and all were transferred to HMS Thongwa, arriving in England on July 22. In training at Seaforth Barracks, he was hospitalized twice at Eastbourne, for Measles and Spanish flu. Ross embarked for Canada on June 23, 1919, and was discharged in Kingston on July 4, 1919. Returning to the family farm, Ross was appointed Township Tax Collector from 1922 through 1924. He married Evelyn Maude Wannamaker in June 1924, bought a General Store in Cordova Mines and had two daughters Betty and Barbara. Appointed the local postmaster from 1925 to 1952. Ross also served as Township Reeve. Ross sold the store and resigned as postmaster in 1952, retiring to a house he built on the Crowe River, where he continued to hunt, fish and trap until he passed away at home on April 10, 1969. BASTIN, Eric John Eric was born in Tottenham, England, on January 22, 1922. He joined the British Army and served with the Royal Engineers, the REME. He flew into France on board of a Glider. He was responsible for a particularly brave act when on a Glider plane, as result of which he saved the lives of his comrades at grave personal risk. He was injured and spent time in a military hospital in the Midlands. After the war, he settled in Canada, started a family, and joined the Canadian Reserve Forces. He lived in Lindsay and passed away on August 26, 2000. BARTLEY, Robert Charles Robert was born in Tobermory, Ontario in 1916. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) and served with the Perth Regiment, 5th Armoured Division. Robert passed away in 1981.
