51 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BRIEN, Elmer Melvin Elmer was born in Mattawa, Ontario on October 19, 1897. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on February 11, 1916, at the age of nineteen in North Bay, Ontario. After his basic training, Elmer joined the 159th Battalion and served in Canada, Britain and France. After being honourably discharged on January 11, 1919, Elmer received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. After the war, Elmer went to work for the Canadian Pacific Railroad. On June 24, 1925, he was married, and he and his wife raised three daughters. Elmer then went to work for Canada Customs until his retirement. He was a proud member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 84. Elmer passed away on March 1, 1987. BROPHY, Allan Michael Allan was born in Sidney, Nova Scotia on July 20, 1917, to Michael and Catherine (Dwyer) Brophy along with three brothers and three sisters. On September 4, 1939, Allan joined the Army (Regular Force) and was posted with the Cape Breton Highlander (5th Armoured Division). He served in England, Italy, France, and Germany. Corporal Allan was discharged on August 13, 1945, and presented with five war medals: 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and War Medal 1939-1945. Allan married Mary (O’Neill) and they raised ten children, five girls and five boys. Allan worked at the Sydney Steel Plant, NS, prior to moving to Kitchener in 1964. He obtained a job at Weston’s Bakery where he worked for 25 years up to retirement. Allan was a thirty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530. Allan passed away on December 3, 1994, and is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Kitchener, Ontario. His name is inscribed on plaque 5 of the Waterloo Legion Veterans Memorial Wall. BROOKS, Ernest Arthur Ernest was born in Battersea, London, UK on July 10, 1896, and was a railway clerk. He was married on August 17, 1915, to May Hannah Garner in Cambridge, UK. They had one daughter, Iris Barbara Brooks, born in 1916. He was enlisted on December 9, 1915, and served with the 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade. Ernest was killed in action on November 12, 1916, at the Battle of the Somme in France. He is remembered with honour by the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of The Somme in France, a war memorial to 72,337 missing servicemen who died in the Battle of The Somme. He met his good friend William Hopkins during World War I. After the war, William married Ernest’s widow, May Hannah Brooks, on November 4, 1919. They moved from Cambridge, England to Picton, Ontario in 1922.
