59 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BUSH, Bertram F. Bertram was born in Mimico, Ontario on January 20, 1925. He enlisted in the Merchant Navy in 1943 and sailed under the North Atlantic Division on ships SS Keydon and SS Rockliffe Hall carrying coal, fuel, lumber, etc. being escorted by sub chasers. His trade was as a bosun wheelsman. He was discharged in 1945. Bert has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Col. Tom Kennedy Branch 582 in Mississauga for fifty years and was presented with the “Quilt of Valour” on March 22, 2019. BYATT, Joseph Sidney Joseph was born in Liverpool, England on May 23, 1902. He enlisted in the Canadian Army (Active) on February 27, 1940 in Toronto, Ontario. He was assigned to the 1st Canadian Division – 48th Highlanders of Canada and served duringWorldWar II in Canada and England where he was the training Senior NCO and served in Northwest Europe. Warrant Officer Class 2 Joseph Sidney Byatt was honourably discharged on October 3, 1945. He was married to Isabel Brennan they raised five children. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 258 for ten years. Joseph passed away at Sunnybrook Veteran’s Hospital in Toronto on March 29, 1990. His final resting place is in Pine Hills Cemetery in Toronto. BUTTREY, Charles Wesley Charles was born in Grey Township, Huron County, Ontario on December 24, 1893. He was one of twelve children of parents William and Jessie Buttrey. He was raised on the farm until he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on May 16, 1916, in Brussels, Ontario when he was 23 years old with the 161st Battalion. He served overseas in England and France and was assigned to the 4th Canadian Machine Gun Corp. He served three years overseas and was discharged in September 1919 as medically unfit. He returned to Canada and made his home in Brussels, was married and worked on the farm until he became employed as a labourer in a factory in Listowel. Charles passed away on July 26, 1954, and was buried in the family cemetery in Elma Township.
