69 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CAMPBELL, Leonard George Leonard was born on January 1, 1919, in Honora, Ontario. Leonard enlisted in the Army on September 3, 1942 and was selected to join the Canadian Postal Corps and first went to Toronto on September 9, 1942, before going to Ottawa to receive training from November 20, 1942 until August 20, 1943. Leonard arrived in Windsor, Nova Scotia in September 1943 at the #1 Transit Camp, and after a fiveday crossing, he arrived in Britain on September 19, 1943. Leonard worked at the Canadian Postal Depot as a mail sorter and received more training until he left for France on July 5, 1944. He was discharged on September 6, 1946. He received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, War Medal 1939-1945 and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He married Jessie Virginia Walford on June 8, 1948, living in Little Current on Manitoulin Island. He worked at various jobs with Shell, Acme Motors, etc. until he and his wife purchased the Laundromat and The Jewel Box which he ran until his young death at 54 years on May 21, 1973. He belonged to many organizations, including The Royal Canadian Legion Little Current Branch 177 for 25 years. CAMPBELL, William Douglas “Doug” Doug was born in Erin, Ontario on March 10, 1912. He began his lifelong career with the Royal Bank of Canada in Erin at age sixteen. He broke away from bank restrictions on enlisting and signed up in the Army (Regular Force) at Wolseley Barracks, London Ontario on August 14, 1942, married, and shipped out to war. He served in Italy, France, Holland, and Germany with the RCEME. When a reporter knocked on her door two years later and asked what he had done to be “Mentioned in Despatches” his wife had no idea. He shared memories of Italian children singing Torne a Surriento for food and the wonderful Dutch people. In 1946, he returned to his banking career after being discharged on March 16. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Aylmer Branch 81 for 28 years. Doug resided in Aylmer, Ontario from 1966 until his passing on October 1, 1995. CAMPBELL, William Alexander There is very little information available in William’s military files. His attestation form states that he was born on January 18, 1891, possibly on St. Joseph Island east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to John and Allison Campbell. He lists his trade as a farmer. William enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) with the 119th Overseas Bat on December 31, 1915. He was later transferred to the 52nd Bat. (New Ontario Regt.) On September 29, 1917, he is listed as killed in action and is buried in the La Targette British Cemetery, Neuville-St. Vaast, France. He is also remembered by a grave marker in Holy Trinity Anglican Cemetery, St. Joseph Island. William’s name is inscribed on the Richards Landing, St. Joseph Island cenotaph.
