83 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND COULTER, William Murney William was born on February 22, 1921, in Thomasburg (near Tweed), Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 to serve in World War II. On August 11, 1944, William was commissioned from the ranks to Pilot Officer serving in the Reserve Special Section of the Royal CanadianAir Force. His medals include the 1939-1945 Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. Due to demobilization, William was discharged in 1945. He passed away on March 27, 2004, at the age of 85. CRAIG, Albert Edward “Bert” Bert was born in Downpatrick, Ireland on September 28, 1913. Immigrating to Canada, he worked on farms in the Erin Twp. area of Ontario. Bert as he was known served with the Lorne Scots Reserve Regiment in 1939-40 and enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) in London, Ontario under the NRMA in October 1942. Bert was fully qualified for the infantry with small arms training but denied overseas service due to an acquired trick knee. With a Japanese submarine shelling a BC lighthouse in 1942, military forces were increased on the west coast. Bert was stationed mainly at Esquimalt and Terrace BC. He participated in costal patrols on Vancouver Island when reports of Japanese subs were received. They would set out at night from Tofino or Ucluelet and when near the coast the vehicle lights would be shut off to prevent enemy detection. One would walk in front of the vehicle to direct the driver. Bert was a musician playing the snare drum in many military parades and is listed with the rank of Bandsman in his Discharge Certificate. He was discharged on May 9, 1946, in London, Ontario. He resided in Georgetown, Ontario from 1949 until his passing on September 21, 1983. COWAL, Norman Howard “Norm” Norm was born on May 14, 1960, in Toronto, Ontario. He was raised in Newmarket, Ontario and enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on November 20, 1980. During his time with the Canadian Forces, he served in the infantry, the Airborne Regiment where he earned his White Wings and Peacekeeping Missions with the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in Cyprus. In 1989, Norm was remustered to a cook. During this time, he was stationed at CFB Gander, Newfoundland, then served in the Gulf War at the Field Hospital and Prisoner of War camp. Eventually, Norm was transferred to the Navy and served on HMCS Cormorant and then the HMCS Toronto. Unfortunately, in 2004, Norm was in a car accident which left him unable to do his normal duties. He was then discharged. Norm was stationed at a great variety of Canadian Bases in Petawawa, Ontario; Baden-Soellingen, Germany; Norway; Cyprus; Winnipeg, Manitoba, ending in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Norm and his family are currently living in Nova Scotia.
