91 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CURRIE, John David John was born in Southampton, Ontario on May 1, 1887. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on January 15, 1916, and served with 160th Bruce Battalion in France until his discharge on June 23, 1919. John suffered from the effects of gassing in August 1918. He passed away in 1959. DAMENT, Harold Morris Harold was born in Pembroke, Ontario, on May 3, 1922. He joined the Lanark & Renfrew Scottish Regiment in May 1942. In August 1942, he was struck off strength and on that same day he reported for selection. Harold was accepted and taken on strength and headed to Fort William Henry Harrison in Helena, Montana, USA. Harold was assigned to the 2nd Company, 3rd Regiment of the First Special Service Force. In September 1942, Harold received his parachute wings and in May 1943 was appointed Acting Sergeant. In July, he disembarked inAmchitka and inAugust, the troops headed for Kiska in the Aleutian Islands. In October 1943, the troops were aboard the Empress of Scotland and disembarked at Casablanca and from there to Oran, Algeria. In November, the troop disembarked in Naples, Italy. The FSSF took Monte La Défense in early December 1943. In January 1944, Harold’s regiment was tasked to assault Monte Majo known as the Frozen Hell. Many men were lost, Harold was badly wounded. He was released from hospital in March and returned to his unit making his way to Naples then on to Anzio. He was a fifteen-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Brechin Branch 488. Harold passed away on October 26, 2000. CURRIE, Willard James Willard was born in St. Edmunds Township, Ontario on May 1, 1896. He enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on January 22, 1916, and served with 160th Bruce Battalion in France until his release on May 17, 1919. He received the Good Conduct Badge. Willard passed away on December 7, 1929, at the Lake Edward Sanatorium. He was buried with full military honours by the Royal 22nd Regiment.
