93 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DAVENPORT, Frank John Frank was born in Romford, Essex, England on October 8, 1925. His family, with two older brothers Henry and Tom, moved to Chatham, Kent in 1929. In 1939, all schools were closed, and Frank was evacuated with thousands of others, but two weeks later, he took a bus home to be with his mother. He served with the Kent Home Guard Infantry for one year in 1941. He transferred to Royal Artillery “Z” Battery stationed on Beatty Avenue, Gillingham, Kent and joined the Royal Army Service Corps on June 21, 1943. Frank’s father and two brothers served with the Royal Engineers Regulars during the war, serving in France and Germany. Frank served in England, India, and Japan until his discharge on July 13, 1948, as a Sergeant. While in Japan, he married an USWAC from Mount Clemens, Michigan and became the first English “War Groom” to come to Michigan. In 1952, Frank joined the Detroit Police Department and shortly before retiring in 1977, he moved to Canada. He is a thirty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 12 and resides in Windsor. DAWSON, Richard Richard was born on November 24, 1943, in Belfast, Ireland. He joined the Army in 1960 and his basic training was in Eglinton County Derry. He belonged to the Royal Ulster Rifles in Northern Ireland. Richard served in Iserlohn, West Germany for one year before his regiment was sent to Bulford, England. He was discharged in 1962 and went to work in construction in Salisbury Wilts, England. In 1963, he got married and he and his wife raised four children. In 1976, Richard moved his family to Canada and lived in Ottawa. In 1994, he moved to Windsor and worked as a truck driver. Richard retired in 2008 and lives in Windsor. He is a proud member of The Royal Canadian Legion for a total of 18 years between Branches 225 and 594. DAVIS, Charles Charles was born on September 27, 1922, in London, Ontario. He joined the Army (Regular Force) at the age of eighteen on May 20, 1941, and served with the 69th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery, RCA. He served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Charles is a Normandy Veteran and landed on Juno Beach D-Day +4, June 10, 1944. At 21 years old, he drove an ammunition truck on to Juno Beach. He was discharged in December 1946. Charles met his wife in London, England and was married on January 16, 1943. They raised four daughters. Charles has returned back to Normandy, France to Juno Beach for the 50th, 55th, 60th, 65th, 70th and in 2019, the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. Charles is a past President of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 255 and was the past President of the Riverside Legion Golf League for many years. Charles celebrated his 100th birthday on September 27, 2022. He is a proud Canadian, Veteran and Life Member of Branch 255 with 71 years of service.
