97 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DOLL, Oliver E. Oliver was born on May 4, 1895, in Brussels, Ontario. He was an electrical worker in Hamilton when he enlisted in the Army (Regular Force) on February 28, 1918, and served with the 1st Depot Battalion of the Western Ontario Regiment as a Sapper. He went to Quebec to help quell a riot before going to England in May on the SS Runic. He joined the 2nd Canadian Engineer Reinforcement Battalion of the CETC. He came home on the SS Belgicin July and was discharged on July 8, 1919. He received the War Service Badge SG OG DA Class B. He was in service for one year. After he returned to Canada, he married, lived in Hamilton in the 1920’s before returning to Brussels to open a shoe repair business and sell Singer sewing machines for the next twenty years. He sold the business, returned to Hamilton, enlisted for World War II and served overseas as a driver in England. A copy of a letter sent to the Brussels Legion is on file at The Royal Canadian Legion Brussels Branch. He passed away in 1956 and is buried in Hamilton Township. Oliver joined the Brussels Branch 218 in the thirties and served as President in 1947. DOTZERT, Woodrow Albert “Woody” Woody was born on June 18, 1918, in Elmira, Ontario, to Edwin Herbert and Louisa (Binkle) Dotzert. He enlisted for World War II in June 1940 with the Highland Light Fusiliers (HLI) in Galt. During basic training, it was determined that he was physically unable to perform prolonged military maneuvers, so he was presented with the Volunteer Service Medal and released in July 1940. Woody married Kathleen (Yendt) and they raised two girls, Shirley and Linda. He retired from Waterloo County Board of Education after 35 years of service, and was also involved with coaching Y.B.C. Youth Bowling and C.N.I. Blind Bowlers. He was a fifteen-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Waterloo Branch 530. Woodrow passed away on May 15, 1999, at the K-W Health Centre of Grand River Hospital. He was laid to rest at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Waterloo City, Ontario. DOTZERT, Donald Clayton Donald was born in Waterloo, Ontario on June 22, 1926, to Clayton Valentine and LuluAsele (Dierlamm) Dotzert. His siblings were Mary Jane (Darling) and Robert. In 1943, at the age of seventeen, Don enlisted to World War II with the Air Force as his father did, but there were family objections to that so Donald subsequently joined the Navy (Regular Force) in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His training brought him to be assigned to an English ship (HMS) Baffin(T275) as a wireless operator and his ship was posted to the North Atlantic. Two years later, in 1945, he was discharged, and he returned to Waterloo. Don married Bonnie Bell and they raised two daughters: Carol Susan and Debra Jane. Don started and owned the Dotzert Glove Company and ran it until he retired. Presently, at the age of 96, and approaching his 97th birthday, he is still driving, attending Remembrance Services, and enjoying a libation at the K-W Naval Association.
