127 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND EKSTROM, Kenneth A. Kenneth was born in Saint John, NB on March 22, 1932. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in July 1954 and served with the Royal Canadian Regiment as a paratrooper going on two tours in Germany and three peacekeeping tours in Cyprus. He was honoured to take part in the Nijmegen March. Warrant Officer Ekstrom was discharged in September 1976. He was a member of Chatsworth Legion Branch 464 and held many offices including President. Kenneth passed away in 2012. EMMS, Murray W. Murray was born on February 25, 1917 in Oro Station, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on February 17, 1943 and served with the Queen’s Own Rifles 2nd Regiment in England, France, Germany and Holland during World War II. On September 16, 1943, his wife was notified he was missing. His troop was going through a burnt out village when they realised it was full of Germans, everyone scattered and he hid out until he was able to jump on an English troop to rejoin his own troops. His wife received a telegram stating that all was well on September 26, 1943. Murray stayed a year after peace was declared and worked as a bartender in a rehab hospital set up in the Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam before being discharged on March 26, 1946. Murray has been a member the Royal Canadian Legion for 10 years. ELLIOTT, Thomas A. Thomas was born on July 30, 1949 in Welland, ON. He enlisted in the United States Army on May 12, 1967 and served with the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team in Germany and Vietnam. He was discharged on December 16, 1969 and awarded the Purple Heart, the Air Medal, the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Parachutist Badge, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. Thomas has been a member of the American Legion Brattleboro Post 5 for 28 years.
