177 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HARE, Roy E. Roy was born on March 11, 1925 in the Day and Bright Township, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in December 1943 and served with the Essex Scottish Regiment during World War II. His unit fought though France, Belgium, and Holland in a T-16 Carrier. He witnessed a whole polish unit bombed accidentally and will never forget the smell of burning flesh. He was made prisoner of war in Germany in February 1945 and was liberated at the end of April 1945 by a British tank crew. He worked 14 months in the repatriation of the Canadian Army and was sent home to Canada on August 1946. He then joined the Army again in 1955, this time serving with the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery until his discharge in 1966. Roy has been a member of Sarnia Legion Branch 62 for over 40 years. HARVEY, Russell M. Russell was born on June 3, 1923 in the Euphrasia Township, ON. He joined the Royal Canadian Army in November 1942 and served with the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps as a driving instructor and later trained as a tank driver. He was to go overseas twice but was retained in Canada as an instructor. In April 1946, he was discharged and worked eight months in the factory before moving to Markdale. He ran a successful fuel oil business for 40 years. Russell was a member of Flesherton-Markdale Legion Branch 333 for 67 years. HARPER, Albert S. Albert was born in Hull, England on January 2, 1913. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on February 18, 1944 and served in Holland, Germany and France during World War II. After being discharged on April 25, 1946, he returned to civilian life and worked as a storekeeper. In 1950, he owned and operated a dairy farm until 1969 when he worked as a jail guard until retirement at the age of 65. He was a member of Port Perry Legion Branch 419. Albert passed away on September 19, 1989.
