195 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND HUTCHINSON, William Richard Richard was born on December 25, 1924 in Pine Orchard, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on August 28, 1943 and served as a Leading Aircraftsman and aircraft mechanic during World War II. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. After the war, he worked on the family farm and later managed his father’s store in Newmarket, ON before being hired by AVRO. He married in 1947 and had five children. Richard was a member of Milton Wesley Legion Branch 426 for 15 years. ILER, Clifford J. Clifford was born on April 21, 1925 in Windsor, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on August 26, 1943. He was accepted at HMCS Hunter as an Ordinary Seaman on January 23, 1944. After training, he was sent to HMCS Naden in BC and served on the minesweeper HMCS Quatsino, among others. By February 1946, he was sent back to HMCS Hunter in Windsor, ON where he was discharged and demobilized. Clifford married, built a house, had four children, and worked at General Motors Transmission Plant in Windsor for 38 years. He was a member of Captain Brien Legion Branch 201 for 52 years. Clifford passed away on February 2, 2012. HUTCHINSON, William F. William was born in Leicester, England on January 9, 1982. He joined the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Canadian Infantry, Central Ontario Regiment during World War I. William was killed in action at the Battle of the Somme on September 19, 1916 when a bomb exploded in the trench he was in. His brother was nearby but survived with shrapnel injuries to his head requiring a steel plate.
