25 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ARMITAGE, Donald S. Donald was born on December 23, 1923 in the Tyendinaga Indian Reserve, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in May 1942 and received his flying training in Oshawa and Camp Borden, ON and his advanced flying training in Shotwick, United Kingdom and Ismailia, Egypt. From October 1944 until May 1945, he flew his plane a total of 105 sorties against enemies in Italy. On one occasion his aircraft was stuck by flak and he was forced to do an emergency landing in Pellaria. Donald was awarded the Aboriginal War Medal as well as the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the Defense Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. After the war, he became involved with his community and was an active member of Earle J. Brant Legion Branch 280. He also owned and operated F. Lapalm Ltd of North American Van Lines in Belleville, ON. Donald passed away on September 30, 2013. AUSTIN, Gordon H. “Gord” Gord was born on April 21, 1914 in Toronto, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on September 2, 1942 and served with the Bomber Command as a wireless gunner with No. 77 Squadron in Elvington, England. After completing 33 sorties, he was discharged on May 7, 1945 and was awarded the Operation Wings of the Royal Canadian Air Force in recognition of gallant service, in that he had completed a tour of operational duty in action against the enemy. He also received the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defense Medal with Clasp, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-45. He was with the Air Cadets from May 1 to October 1, 1947. He became a radio operator teaching his wife and many others upon return to civilian life. He was a member of Collingwood Legion Branch 63. Gord passed away on August 21, 1967. ARNOLD, Frederick L. Frederick was born on June 22, 1931 in Montreal, QC. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on August 12, 1950 and served with the Royal Canadian Regiment 2nd Battalion and the Royal Canadian Service Corps in Korea. He was discharged on September 25, 1952. Frederick has been a member of Hollowood Legion Branch 425 for 12 years.
