27 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BABIN, Marcel E. Marcel was born on February 27, 1948 in Kapuskasing, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in December 1965 and served with the 22nd Regiment in Germany. Corporal Babin was part of the Armed Forces who looked after security for diplomats and government buildings during the Quebec Crisis, in Montreal. Marcel was discharged in August 1972 and now resides in Kapuskasing, ON. BAKER, James N. “Norm” Norm was born on September 1, 1916 in York County, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in 1940. In 1942, he joined the Queen’s York Rangers and in August 1943 he went to England with the 3rd Reinforcement Draft. There he served on the staff of No.4 Canadian Infantry Reinforcement Unit with rank of Corporal until 1944 when he requested to be transferred to an infantry regiment. On July 25 1944 he crossed the Channel to join the Royal Regiment of Canada C Company Headquarters. Norm narrowly escaped death when the Royal Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force bombed the rest area he was in, near Le Haut Mesnil, France on August 14, 1945 and he suffered a slight wound from a mortar bomb in Belgium. After Victory in Europe day, he was attached to Canadian Section, 2 Echelon Headquarters 21 Army Group at Lippe, Germany until the Regiment’s repatriation in December 1945. Sergeant Baker was discharged on January 6, 1946. James has been a member of Maple Leaf Legion Branch 266 for 54 years. BAINES, Gordon Gordon was born on February 3, 1913 in Montreal, QC. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1940 as a telegraphist. He served aboard the HMCS Amherst and HMCS Medicine Hat in the North Atlantic searching for submarines for the duration of the war. He was discharged in 1945 and married Hazel, who was also a Navy veteran. He retired as a hardware buyer and resides in Hanover, ON. Gordon has been a member of Hanover Legion Branch 130.
