29 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BALCARRAS, Donald E. Donald was born on February 25, 1925 in Waterloo, ON. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Army in May 1944 and after training in Chatham, ON, he ended up overseas as a reinforcement for the Essex Scottish Regiment. Donald participated in the campaign through Belgium, Holland and Germany. He stayed on with the Allied Army of Occupation and was discharged in June 1946. In civilian life, he worked 49 years at Ontario Die Company in Waterloo. Donald married Edna in 1948 and raised four sons. They were married 49 years and he later married Cecilia. Donald has been a member of Waterloo Legion Branch 530 for 23 years. BALL, Harvey A. Harvey was born on August 2, 1921 in St Mary’s, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on June 23, 1942 and served with the Central Mechanization Depot of the Canadian Ordnance Corps as a blacksmith in England. He proudly wore the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. Harvey was a member of St Mary’s Legion Branch 236 for over 40 years before he passed away on December 18, 1992. BALKWILL, Arthur Arthur was born on October 18, 1896 in Matchedash Township, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army with the 157th Battalion on February 15, 1916. He was wounded in the leg in 1918.. During World War II, he was in the Veteran’s Guard, serving in northern Ontario. He was discharged on March 28, 1919 as Lance Sergeant and after the war he returned to his family and farm. He was a member of Coldwater Legion Branch 270. Arthur passed away on January 28, 1975.
