35 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BASKERVILLE (PERRY), Isavela J. “Vee” Vee was born on March 7, 1920 in Winnipeg, MB. She enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in January 1943 and served with the Nutrition Lab and the Hospital Lab of the Medical Corps during World War II. She was discharged in December 1945 and she returned to the lab at Swifts in Edmonton, AB. Vee has been a member of Chesley Legion Branch 144 for 19 years. BAYTOR, Paul W. Paul was born on April 2, 1922 in Kluknava, Czechoslovakia. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force at the age of 20. Just two years earlier he had become a proud Canadian Citizen, having moved to Canada from Czechoslovakia. During the war, he earned the rank of Warrant Officer and served as a wireless instructor in L’Ancinne-Laurette, QC before setting out to Scotland and England. In Europe, he flew primarily at night in aircrafts such as Wellingtons and Halifaxes. Paul operated the radar and translated the Morse code messages from Bomber Command for the crew and was able to decode approximately 10-12 words per minute. Paul was discharged in August 1945. BATES, Arthur “Art” Art was born on February 28, 1932 in North Bay, ON. At the young age of 20, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in September 1951 as an infantryman. He trained in Wainwright, Alberta and served with the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment in Korea and was there for “cease fire” on July 27, 1953. On his return, he also served with the Canadian Airborne Regiment 1st Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment in London, ON. He was discharged in October 1954 at the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the Canadian Korea Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for Korea and the United Nations Service Medal for Korea. Art has been a member of Sir Arthur Currie Legion Branch 116 for 5 years.
