51 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BRENTON, Edwin S. Edwin was born in Singapore on November 19, 1914. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served with No. 31 Squadron, flying Dakotas from Burma. The No. 31 Squadron supported the 14th Army as well as re-supply and airdrops. The Squadron supported Chindit Raids, the epic battles of Kohima, Imphal and the Araka as well as hump runs across the Himalayas. Their Dakota was reported missing on August 15, 1943 and the aircraft or its occupants were never recovered. Edwin is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial. BRIDGE, Edward C. Edward was born in London, England on January 12, 1883. He was married and had two children, with a third on the way, when he left his job to join in the Royal Canadian Army on February 28, 1916. He and his family had returned to England from Montreal for a visit in 1914 after having lived in Canada for four years when the war broke out. Following training in the Shorncliffe area, he was sent to France in May. He attained the rank of Bombardier, serving with the Second Artillery Division Ammunition Column. Edward rode one of the horses that pulled the ammunition caisson to the big guns and was part of the major battles, including Vimy Ridge, from the winter of 1916 until the end of the war. Following the armistice on November 11, 1918, he marched to Bonn, Germany with his horse to become part of the occupational force. He was discharged on July 3, 1919 and he and his family returned to their home in Montreal, QC. Edward passed away on November 19, 1942. BRENTON, Kenneth S. Kenneth was born on November 8, 1916. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on August 20, 1942 and served with No. 409 Squadron in England during World War II. He was a navigator flying mark XIII mosquitos on night fighter missions from Annoeullin, France. Kenneth was killed in action in 1945 when his plane lost control and crashed into the ground near Lille-Vandeuille, France. His brother Edwin, also in the Royal Canadian Air Force, had been reported missing two years prior to the accident. Kenneth is buried at Adegem Canadian War Cemetery in Belgium.
