55 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BURLEY, Marie M. Marie was born in Llanelli, South Wales, United Kingdom on April 1, 1927. She enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in 1945 and served with the Auxiliary Territorial Service in Egypt and England. Marie was discharged in 1948 and was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, the Canadian Peacekeeping Medal and the 1939-45 War Medal. BURNHAM, Herbert LaFontaine Herbert was born on May 28, 1869 in Hillsburgh, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army and served with the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, A Battery. He saw action in South Africa for a year enduring such hardships that his health was undermined and he never again regained a normal standard. He was injured on board the ship on his return journey from Africa and was confined in a Halifax hospital for several weeks before he could complete his trip home to Ontario. After he returned home to Millbrook, he worked in business in Peterborough, ON and later joined his brother George at his store in Millbrook becoming the “Burnham Bros.” firm. Herbert died following surgery in a Toronto Hospital on November 9, 1924 at the age of 56. BURNHAM, Ernest LaFontaine Ernest was born on August 14, 1906 in Millbrook, ON. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.A.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering in 1931. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on March 21, 1941 and served as a radar officer (ground and airborne radars) during World War II in England, Ireland and India. Flight Lieutenant Burnham was in charge of four radar stations at various times. He was discharged on July 27, 1945. After the war, he returned to his work as Assistant Engineer for the Peterborough Utilities Commission. In 1955, he moved to Belleville where he later became the General Manager of the Belleville Public Utilities Commission, retiring in 1972. He married Bernice Thornton and had three daughters. Ernest passed away on August 30, 1991.
