85 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND COPP, Clayton C. Clayton was born in Saskatoon, SK on August 9, 1921. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air force on July 12, 1940 and served in England during World War II. In February 1942, He went overseas and was stationed in Wales, near the coast where he was subject to an air attack as the German Battleship, Bismark, was making a run for the open seas. No. 302 Squadron had the Hurricane and Spitfire when moved to a base near London. They had V1 and V2 bombs often. V1 had a motor that when it stopped it came down, the V2 gave no warning. He was then posted to No. 427 Squadron Bomber Command with Halifax and Wellington Bombers. In March 1945, the war was coming to an end and they were told as a Squadron to take down their blackout curtains and to turn the runway lights on and because of this they had no defence when they got attacked. He was discharged in June 1945 and worked for CNR as a brakeman and a conductor for 35 years. Clayton has been a member of Cpt. Fred Campbell Legion Branch 134 for 51 years. COSGROVE, Stephen Stephen was born in Liverpool, England on June 5, 1926. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army in August 1944 and served with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada in the European Theater during World War II. He was discharged in 1947. Stephen has been a member of Brooklin Legion Branch 152 for 47 years. CORBETT, Stanley A. Stanley was born on June 24, 1918 in the Downie Township, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on June 2, 1940 and served with the Perth Regiment, C Company in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. Private Corbett was discharged on October 18, 1945 and was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp. He was a member of St Mary’s Legion Branch 236 for 57 years. Stanley passed away on January 6, 1997.
