87 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND COTTYN, Charlie Charlie was born in Ste Rose du Lac, MB on December 1, 1924. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942 and served in the High Seas and England during World War II. After the war he took a loan from the Veterans Land Act and purchased a farm near Ste Rose du Lac, MB. He moved to Ontario in 1947 where he was a member of Port Perry Legion Branch 419. Charlie passed away on September 16, 1993. COWIN, David A. David was born on June 18, 1933 in Cobourg, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army on April 4, 1949 and served with the 33rd Medium Artillery Regiment. David was discharged on January 6, 1964. COUSE, Mervyn A. Mervyn was born on January 22, 1923 in Hamilton, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on October 31, 1942 and served with the Royal Air Force No. 12 Bomber Squadron in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Norway during World War II. He was a navigator on a Lancaster bomber flying out of Wickenby, England. In 29 flight operations, he participated in raids on some of the most heavily defended targets in Germany. He also took part in sea-mining operations near Oslo and bombing “The Eagle’s Nest” near Berchtesgaden. Mervyn was discharged on September 14, 1945 and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. In 2000, he wrote “A tour of Operations with 12 Squadron RAF”. He graduated from the University of Toronto in Civil Engineering in 1950 and spent most of his career working for Proctor & Redfern, retiring as Senior Vice-President. He was married to Agnes for 62 years and they had four daughters. Mervyn passed away on January 10, 2010.
