103 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CONWAY, George Raymond George was born on January 15, 1918 in Toronto, Ontario. He joined the Militia at Napanee, Ontario on June 1, 1935. On January 15, 1940, he enlisted in the Active Force RCHA and went to England with the 5th Medium Regiment in June 1943. George saw action in Italy, France, Belgium, and Holland where he was when the war ended. Part of his duty was to detain German Soldiers and consult with the Dutch people to see if they had committed any war crimes and to arrest them if they had. He arrived back in Canada and was discharged in Kingston on January 4, 1946, re-enlisted on April 26, 1947 and then discharged in Sault Ste. Marie on October 31, 1973. George was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal (Overseas), War Medal 1939-1945, 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal 1939-45, Special Service Medal, NATO, Efficiency Medal, Canadian Forces Decoration (CD1). He was a member of Pembroke Legion Branch 72. George passed away on June 18, 2012. COOK, William L. William was born in Glasgow, Scotland on December 9, 1929. He enlisted in the Army in 1948. He served with the Royal Engineers in the United Kingdom. He was discharged in 1951. William has been a member of Huntsville Legion Branch 232. COOK, Orville M. Orville was born on April 11, 1921 in Toronto, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army in June 1940. He served with the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada in France, Belgium, Germany, and Holland during World War II. He was discharged on August 8, 1945 and went to work for Brinks Canada until his retirement at the age of 65. Orville is featured in Roy Whitsed’s book “Queen’s Own Rifles” with a chapter called “Cookie’s Luck”. He was a member of Tara Legion Branch 383 for 48 years. Orville passed away on April 5, 2011.
