105 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND COON, Arthur L. Arthur was born on August 17, 1923 in Gravenhurst, ON. He enlisted in the Army on November 5, 1940. He served with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada and served in Canada, Jamaica, England, France, Belgium, and Holland during World War II. He was wounded on August 5, 1944 in Tilly-la-Campagne, France and following a hospital stay in England, he was returned to his regiment in France. He was discharged and returned to Canada in March 1946. He was an active member of Harry Wray Legion Branch 302 for 59 years; he was awarded Life Membership and the Legion Meritorious Service Medal and Palm Leaf. Arthur passed away on April 6, 2005. COOPER, Fred G. Fred was born in Ancaster Twp Ontario on 8 July 1924. He enlisted in the Canadian Army as an Infantryman 16 February 1943. After basic training at Camp Borden, he was posted to the 1st Battalion of the Argyle Sutherland Highlanders based out of Hamilton Ontario. Theatre of Operations was England, France, Germany, Belgium and Holland. As an Infantryman scout, he would carry out advance reconnaissance to check out enemy positions and artillery locations then report back thus preparing the regiment for battle. He often said you needed nerves of steel. He participated in the victory parade in Berlin on his 21st birthday in 1945. While serving in Holland, he was housed with a Dutch family whom he kept in touch with and visited them in the 70’s. His medals include the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the War Medal 1939-45. He was also presented with the Liberator’s Medal in Bergen OP Zoom in Holland. Passed away in 2010 at age 86. COONEY, Stephen H. Stephen was born in Breckenridge, QC on April 13, 1921. He enlisted in the Army on July 16, 1942. He served with the Canadian Infantry Corps and served with the United Kingdom, the Central Mediterranean area and Continental Europe. He was discharged on November 17, 1945. Stephen was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, and the France and Germany Star.
