111 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND CRAIGHEAD, John M. John was born on April 7, 1924 in Stirling, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on January 11, 1943. He served as a gunner on Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships in the North Atlantic and Pacific Ocean during World War II. He received his discharged as a Leading Seaman on January 10, 1946. After his discharge, John continued his military background and became part of the Smith Falls Police Force and later joined the Ontario Provincial Police with the Ottawa Detachment and later transferring to the Cornwall Detachment. In June 1951, John moved to Oshawa, ON with his family and worked his way up the ladder to become Manager of General Motors Plant Security. He retired from General Motors on July 1, 1980. John has been a member of Oshawa Legion Branch 637 for 57 years. CRATE, Frederick S. Frederick was born on January 7, 1915 in Cobourg, ON. He enlisted in the Army on December 7, 1940. He served with the Royal Canadian Artillery in England, Italy and France during World War II. He was discharged on March 11, 1945. After the war he returned to Hastings and became post master as well as clerk for the village. He and Helen had six children. He was an active Legion Member of Hastings Legion Branch 106 and served many years as Secretary/Treasurer and as President the same year Helen was President for the Ladies Auxiliary. Frederick passed away on February 15, 1993. CRANDON, Wilfred H. Wilfred (Tiny) was born in Strathroy Ontario on 7 Dec 1924. On 18 October 1943 he enlisted as an Infantryman. After training in Brampton and Camp Borden he went to England with the Armoured Corps. He was transferred to the Infantry and headed for Europe serving in Belgium and Holland. His unit was the Highland Light Infantry Regiment under the Canadian 3rd Division. On 7 December 1944 Wilfred spent his 20th birthday, being pinned down by rifle and machine gun fire. At the German border, he contracted jaundice and was hospitalized in Belgium and eventually returning to England. His decorations include the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, War Medal 1939-45 and the Normandy Campaign Medal. On demobilization he was honourably discharged September 1946 at the rank of Private. Wilfred has been a member of Sir Arthur Currie Legion Branch 116 for over 38 years.
