145 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND DURIE, Allan F. Allan was born on July 12, 1915 in Chesley, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on February 24, 1944. He provided training to younger service men in the operation and maintenance of military vehicles. When the war in Europe ended, he was sent to Fort Sill, Oklahoma to train as part of the Canadian Contingent being prepared to invade Japan. Craftsman Durie was discharged on April 26, 1946. Allan passed away on September 19, 1981. EARNSHAW, Thelma J. J. Thelma was born in Evanturel, ON in 1915. She enlisted in the Army in 1939. Sergeant Earnshaw served with the Canadian Women’s Army Corps during World War II. She served in active duty for a year and a half at the Canadian Military Headquarters in London, England. Her unit was transferred to Antwerp where she was responsible for receiving and processing daily dispatches from the front lines. She and her unit moved extensively throughout Europe and at war’s end she was serving in Lemgo, Germany. In 1953, Thelma and three other members of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps contingent represented Canada at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. She retired from the Army in 1961 and moved to the North West Territories where she later received an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy for her work with Native people. Thelma passed away in 2011. DUVAL (SKOGAN), Alma H. Alma was born on March 24, 1926 in Inwood, Manitoba. She enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on December 12, 1944. She was discharged on March 1, 1946. She married Gord.
