147 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND EAST, Clarance “Clare” Clare was born in Montreal, QC on April 6, 1927. He enlisted in the Army on February 12, 1945. He served with the Royal Canadian Engineers and later the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, as an apprentice in early 1945. He remained in the Army after the war and served with a wide variety of units, but mostly with artillery units in western Canada. Eventually, he retired after 33 years of service. Clare served in the Army Reserve and, later, in the Supplementary Reserve. He was discharged on December 31, 1978. He was awarded a Canadian Forces Decoration and single Clasp for long service and good conduct. Clare has been a member of Fred Gies Legion Branch 50 for 49 years. EDSALL, William J. William was born on July 24, 1935 in the Township of Wainfleet, ON. He enlisted in the Army in January 1953 and was assigned to Base Borden for training. He was posted to Churchill, MB for a year before going back to Borden. He married in 1955. After finishing his tour in Borden, William left the army for a year and returned in 1956 for retraining at Borden, followed by another stint in Churchill, MB. He returned to Borden with his family and joined the field ambulance unit assigned to Camp Gagetown, NB. He worked in hospitals in Gagetown, Toronto, Kingston, and Ottawa. He did a tour in Germany in 1965. William finished his active service in Camp Shilo, MB and was released from the forces in 1968. Since then, he has lived in the Huntsville area and worked as a carpenter until he retired. William has been a member of Huntsville Legion Branch 232 for 36 years. ECKER, Clayton W. Clayton was born on July 5, 1906 in Glenshee, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on July 1, 1940. He served with the 41st Light Anti-Aircraft Battery in Italy, England, and France during World War II. He was a member of the 1st Battery recruited under auspices of Norfolk Regiment of Canada during World War II. They were the first to go overseas and played an active role in anti-aircraft defense of England, as well as the continent. Clayton passed away on October 15, 1958.
