155 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND FAIRFIELD, Bruce R. Bruce was born on December 2, 1916 in Minden, ON. He enlisted in the Army in February 1941. He served with the Royal Highland Regiment of Canada (Black Watch) in Canada, England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany during World War II. Bruce was reported missing in action after the Black Watch’s disastrous attack on Verrières Ridge in July 1944. He was actually captured but escaped to rejoin his regiment and serve through the rest of the war. He was discharged in February 1946 and was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, and the Defence Medal. He was a member of Harry Brown V.C. Legion Branch 497 for 46 years and also served as Past President. Bruce passed away on February 13, 1995. FITZNER, George George was born on August 18, 1928 in Toronto, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army in 1944. He served with the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada during World War II. He was discharged in 1945. George has been a member of Orillia Legion Branch 34 for 42 years. FETTES, W. A. “Craig” Craig was born on January 2, 1926 in Gravenhurst, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on September 1, 1943. He served as an air gunner in a Lancaster with No. 431 Iroquois Squadron in Canada and the United Kingdom during World War II. He was discharged on August 27, 1945 and was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the 1939-45 War Medal, and the 1939-45 Star. After the war, he married and had eight children. He was an active Life Member of Waterford Legion Branch 123 and served as President, Vice President, Secretary Treasurer, was on the bar committee and volunteered as a cook. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal with Palm Leaf. Craig passed away on May 28, 1997.
