173 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND GILDAY, William E. William was born on June 20, 1923 in Toronto, ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in October 1942. Before joining the regular force, William was a member of the Royal Canadian Artillery Reserve from 1940 to 1941, serving with 25 Medium Battery. He served with the RAF Ferry Command during World War II. He was discharged in October 1945. He was also a dispatch rider for Air Raid Protection in Toronto from 1950 to 1951, and was a fighter controller with 2400 Aircraft Control and Warning Unit in Toronto from 1952 to 1953. William has been a member of St. Marys Legion Branch 236 for 20 years. GILMORE, Glen M. Glen was born on September 4, 1922 in Renfrew, ON. He enlisted in the Army on June 14, 1944. He served with the Regina Rifle Regiment in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. He landed at Juno Beach in Normandy on D-Day and encountered extremely heavy fighting as they fought their way through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was discharged on February 6, 1946. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. After the war, he returned to Renfrew, married and raised four children. He was a member of Renfrew Legion Branch 148 for 35 years. Glen passed away on June 13, 2001 at the age of 78. GILLAN, William B. William was born on June 4, 1924 in Tilbury-West, ON. He enlisted in the Army in May 1943. On completion of his basic training he joined the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment and was shipped overseas to join the war. He spent time in England, Italy, and Germany during World War II. He was a Prisoner of War in Germany. He was discharged in August 1945. William was awarded the 1939-45 Star, the Italy Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the War Medal and the International Prisoner of War Medal. After the war, he spent many years working in construction of one kind or another. He was a member of Sir Arthur Currie Legion Branch 116 for 28 years and held many positions in the branch. In 2001, he was awarded a Certificate of Merit at the branch level, Legionnaire of the Year in 2002 and his Life Membership in 2007. William passed away on June 4, 2009.
