19 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND ADAMS, Allan F. Allan was born in St. Catharines, Ontario in 1923. He enlisted in the Army on June 28, 1940 and served as a Sergeant with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment in Canada, Newfoundland, Britain and France during World War II. Allan was killed in action in France on September 27, 1944. He is buried at ADEGEM Canadian War Cemetery. ADAMS, Colin H. Colin was born in St. Catharines, Ontario on October 30, 1930. He enlisted in the Army on October 10, 1950 and served in Canada, NATO and Germany as a Reservist with the Royal Canadian Dental Corp Personnel Administration. He was discharged on December 31, 1986. On retirement, he worked as a self-supporting volunteer in community development in Uganda and Tanzania and relief in Sudan. ADAMS, Charles A. W. Charles was born in Peckham, North London, England on March 9, 1917. He began his long and distinguished career in the Canadian Forces with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment band of St. Catharines, ON, and then in 1938, the Royal Canadian Regiment band in London, ON. He served with the RCR until the mid-1940’s. Captain Adams was honoured to be selected for bandmaster training at Kneller Hall, the Royal Military School of Music in Britain, and graduated in 1957. He was then appointed Associate Director of the 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade band in Germany sharing duties with Captain James Gayfer. On his return to Canada, he was appointed director of Music of the newly formed Guards band in Petawawa, ON. In 1964, he became the Command Inspector for bands in Central Command but returned to the Canadian Guards band as its director of Music in 1966. In 1967, Charles was called upon to provide music for the numerous arrivals to Canada for the Centennial celebrations, and was on public duties in Ottawa for several months. Captain Adams retired from the Canadian Forces in 1969 but maintained a keen interest in the military bands in Canada and wrote them letters of support. As one of the last few remaining military musicians from pre-war days, his work helped to lay the groundwork for the outstanding professional military bands we have in Canada today. He was awarded the CD and had music degrees LRAM, ARCM. After his discharge, he taught High School music at two high schools in Pembroke, ON. He received the Teacher of the Year award in 1971. He was a member of the Merritton Legion Branch 138. Charles passed away on August 30, 2007.
