39 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BARBE, Hector J. Hector was born on August 28, 1922 in the Neelon Township, Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and served with the Porcupine Squadron in England during World War II. On one particular mission on October 6, 1944, his plane was taking heavy flak and was pierced by falling debris. One of his crewmates lost three fingers as a result of that attack during a raid on Dortmund in the Ruhr Valley. That was the mission they didn’t think they would make it back. Hector was discharged in 1945. BASKERVILLE, John H. “Jack” Jack was born on August 12, 1918. He enlisted in the Army and served with the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. He was a member of Simcoe Legion Branch 79 for 40 years. Jack passed away on June 6, 1985. BARRATT, Leonard Leonard was born in England on March 30, 1912. He enlisted in the Army in June 1939, leaving his wife, Ruth, and six children behind. He served with the 1st Hussars in Great Britain, France, Holland, Germany, and Belgium. He was discharged on September 14, 1945 and returned home to Toronto, ON where his youngest child was born within the year. Leonard worked as an oil furnace repairman for City Service before the war and was able to return to this job after the war. He stayed with City Service through their name change to BP Oil. They moved around a lot before finally settling down in Toronto where he took a position as a campus policeman for the University of Toronto. He was a member of The General Chris Vokes Bronte Legion Branch 486. Leonard passed away on December 22, 1999.
