45 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BECKING, James I. James was born on January 7, 1933 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He joined the University Naval Training Divisions at HMCS Star in Hamilton in 1953. He received his basic training at HMCS Stadacona where he was trained in pilotage, torpedo and anti-submarine weapons and detection, and gunnery. In May 1954, he was sent to HMCS Esquimalt where he was trained for sea duty and was sent to sea aboard the New Glasgow. James was commissioned Sub-Lieutenant in 1956 and went on to civilian life in 1957 to serve as Director of Traffic Engineering and Director of Operations for the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton until he retired in 1991. James has been a member of Richmond and District Legion Branch 625 for 12 years. BELLISLE, Raymond R. Raymond was born on June 3, 1924 in Toronto, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served with the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa in England, Juno Beach, Normandy, Holland, Germany, and Belgium. He was wounded by shrapnel and spent a few days in the hospital. He was discharged in 1945. He was a Life Member of Barry’s Bay Legion Branch 406. Raymond passed away on October 20, 2007. BELCHER, W. J. “Bill” Bill was born in Toronto, Ontario. He was a member of the militia before enlisted in the Army in August 1940 and served with the Algonquin Regiment, 4th Armoured Division. He saw service in Newfoundland, England, France, Belgium, and Holland during World War II. He was wounded while crossing the Leopold Canal in Belgium and was sent back to England. He returned to Holland in May 1945. Following the end of World War II in Europe, Bill returned to Canada and was discharged in November 1945. After the war, he worked for the Ontario Northland Railroad. He came to Hawk Junction in 1948 and worked for the Algoma Central Railroad. He helped organize the Hawk Legion and served as Membership Chairman. When the Legion in Hawk turned in their charter, Bill transferred to Wawa Legion Branch 429.
