49 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BERGERON, Fernand G. Fernand was born on November 4, 1916 in Cochrane, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 and served with Pacific Command during World War II. Private Bergeron was discharged in 1946. He worked as a carpenter for Spruce Falls Power and Paper Company Ltd. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was also a founding member of Notre-Dame-des-Victoires church in Kapuskasing. Fernand passed away on November 28, 2009. BEUKEMA, Laurens Simon Laurens was born in Voorburg, Holland on January 8, 1927. He enlisted in the Army in June 1947 and, after five months of basic training, he was deployed overseas to the Dutch Islands of Indonesia. His unit landed on the Sumbawa Island, where they trained for another six months before going to the islands of Celebes and Bali. Their last stop was on the Island of Java before returning home. Discharged in May 1950. Upon his return to Holland, he and his wife immigrated to Canada in 1951 and settled in Harriston, ON. In civilian life, Laurens worked for Canada Packers in Harriston and became very involved with the Harriston Legion Branch 296, where he served on numerous committees, as well as President from 1988 to 1990. Laurens has been a member of the Legion for 43 years. BÉRUBÉ, Joseph L. A. J. Charles Joseph was born on January 28, 1941 in Saint Éleuthère, QC. He enlisted in the Army in April 1958. He was discharged due to medical reasons in April 1964. He married in 1968 and moved to Temagami and worked in the Sherman Mine for approximately two years and has ran his own company ever since. Joseph has been a member of Temagami Legion Branch 408.
