51 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BILLICH, Samuel Wenzel Samuel was born in Kingston, Jamaica on August 8, 1959. He immigrated to Canada in 1961 and settled in North Toronto. He enlisted in the Army and served as a Private with the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment. He later joined the British Army on September 24, 1984. He served as a military accountant for the next five years in England, Northern Ireland, and Germany. Samuel was awarded the General Service Medal with Northern Ireland Clasp. In January 1992, he rejoined the Canadian Forces with the Queen’s York Rangers. He served with them for the next 20 years as their Paymaster/Captain. It is during this period that he received his Canadian Forces’ Decoration with bar. In 1998, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace. For his exemplary public service, Poland decorated Samuel with the Meritorious Service Cross. He has been admitted into the Venerable Order of St. John. Jamaica paid tribute to his service accomplishment by decorating him with the Meritorious Service Medal. Samuel has been a member of Fort York Legion Branch 165 for 11 years. BIRCH, Charles Charles was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, Wales on May 21, 1890. He enlisted in the British Army in 1914 and served with the 20th Battalion, 1st Division and was part of the Army and the Canadian Expeditionary Forces. Private Birch served in France for a year and a half before he was wounded and shipped to England to recuperate in early 1916. Charles was also part of the 2nd Division at Vimy Ridge, the high point of German Positions. He was discharged on January 20, 1918. He volunteered and served in the Veterans Home Guard during World War II. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. He was a member of Lakefield Legion Branch 77 for 40 years. Charles passed away on September 9, 1968. BILLINGTON, Samuel James James was born in Sandbach, Chester, England on November 1, 1888. He enlisted in the Army and served with the 142nd Battalion in Continental Europe and France during World War I. James was killed in action in Vimy Ridge on May 28, 1917.
