69 www.on.legion.ca ONTARIO COMMAND BROGDEN, Michael P. Michael was born on January 26, 1941 in Hamilton, Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in April 1960. He served as a stoker on HMCS Restigouche, HMCS Stadacona, HMS Astute and HMCS Micmac on the High Seas. He applied for a position with naval air, but those were hard to come by and he was unsuccessful, so he signed up for service on submarines. While onboard the British submarine HMS Astute in 1962, they were diverted from their exercise to assist in monitoring for Russian activities during the Cuban missile crisis. He was discharged in April 1963. Michael has been a member of St. Marys Legion Branch 236 for 7 years. BROWN, Frederick Frederick was born on January 9, 1923 in Weston, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army in February 1942 and served as signalman with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signal in Normandy, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany during World War II. He was discharged in January 1946 and went on to work for the municipality of Clarington until his retirement. Fred was a very active poppy volunteer and carried branch flags in numerous parades and events. He was a dedicated family man. Frederick has been a member of Bowmanville Legion Branch 178 for 37 years and has been Past President. BROGDEN, Thomas H. Thomas was born on June 25, 1915 in Hamilton, Ontario. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy on September 1943. He served with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in Europe during World War II. He was discharged in September 1945. Thomas was awarded the British Empire Medal for bravery. After his time in the service, he became the first business manager at the St. Marys Hospital. He was a member of St. Marys Legion Branch 236. Thomas passed away on December 13, 1963.
